With the outburst of COVID -19, various sectors of the Nigerian government has been sent on compulsory shut down because of it’s ravaging effect.
The devastating effect of this pandemic did not exclude the educational sector. An alternative to the operation was the only way out. Taking advantage of the wide coverage in technology, the Federal government made an electronic learning portal – schoolgate.ng and mobileclassroom.com.ng. for students in primary and secondary school.
The minister of state for education; Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba announced the development of the portal on Friday, 24th April. The learning is coordinated by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in conjunction with the States Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs). Users of Airtel network can have free access to the portal. Mr Nwajiuba assured that necessary procedures will be taken to enable other network access the portal freely.
He encouraged parents to get their wards involved in the online class as it is almost as conducive as their normal classrooms and that time tables are available on the federal ministry’s website for the 36 states.
An added advantage to the online class is that student can download and learn at their own pace.
In order to make COVID-19 inexcusable for learning, classes are made available on other channels especially local TV stations and radio broadcast in 15 States of the country.
