Response to COVID-19: Nigerian Air Force Commissioned Newly Built Kidney Treatment Centre

There are some sectors of the country that will not completely shut down in spite of the prevalence of the pandemic because of its major role in the country. A good example is the Nigerian Air Force(NAF).

With this truth staring in the eye, the next available option is looking for ways to manage the situation and ensure personnel are reduced against the risk of getting infected.

Since the inception of the Nigerian Air Force, it has been known to be committed to the healthcare of its personnel and their families. In furtherance of its commitment towards the provision of qualitative healthcare services, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned a newly constructed and well-equipped Dialysis Centre at the 063 NAF Hospital, Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja.

The Dialysis Centre has a large Treatment Room with 3 Dialysis Machines and other support equipment as well as a comfortable Reception Area, 2 Consulting Rooms and a Nursing Station. The Centre is equipped with facilities such as integrated water supply/treatment as well as alternative power supply systems. The hospital has a well-trained team of medical consultants, nurses and support staff that will effectively man the Centre for optimal performance. All these essentials make it easy to take care of a minimum of 3 patients every day; 7 days a week.

While the representative of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshal Oladayo Amao, NAF Chief of Policy and Plans, on the tour around the building was speaking, he said kidney is one of the organs that the COVID-19 attacks, hence the centre will enhance the treatment of patients with the disease.

Recently, the NAF converted the Accident and Emergency Unit at the 063 NAF Hospital to a 25-bed COVID-19 Management Centre as part of facilities designated in the Armed Forces of Nigeria COVID-19 Response Team’s contribution to the National Response. This would surely complement the newly designated COVID-19 Management Centre.
