Meet The First Nigerian To Hold A PhD In Railway Research

Bello Sambo is a young, enthusiastic and vibrant academician of 30years. He was born in Kano state and brought up in Kaduna state. He had his secondary education in Zamani College where he chose the sciences in his senior class and started building a career in it.

He wrote WAEC eventually and had an outstanding result. He went and further his education at the Eastern Mediterranean University in Northern Cyprus for a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He came back to Nigeria to undergo the compulsory one year service to the nation as a Site Engineer at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He returned to the United Kingdom to the University of Huddersfield for his Masters in Control Systems and Instrumentation between 2013 and 2014.

He graduated with a distinction, precisely as the top of his class at the end of his MSc. Meanwhile, his project supervisor who had noticed the outstanding performance encouraged him to maximize his full potential and continue to pursue a PhD. At 30, he bagged a doctorate degree from the University of Huddersfield between 2014 and 2019.

Expressing how thrilled he was about his achievements, he said attaining such a height at that age has improved his critical and analytical thinking, built him against resilience and shapen his ability to collaborate. He also iterated several other things he learnt in the course of his pursuit.

In his words, “I can confidently say that my critical thinking, horizon and resilience are at an all-time high. I have also improved a lot on my ability to collaborate with teams and make the most of peer reviews/critique. The biggest challenge of being in such a specialist discipline is the ability to remain patient, work persistently hard to interlock the civil, electrical mechanical and computing aspects of my daily activities as a researcher.”

He encouraged everyone with a PhD to pursue a career with it and utilize their knowledge to make contributions with or without necessarily calling on them.

He got his job as a result of his impressive performance in his research work where the decision to retain him as a worker was made for global projects. He currently works with the Institute of Railway Research of the University of Huddersfield from 2018 till date. He’s the brain behind Newark WR Study Processing and Stimulating Design.
