In an attempt to avoid mental deterioration and improve the quality of life of inmates, Nigerian Correctional Service gave licence to inmates to take courses at NOUN.
Their decision yielded a positive result as one of the inmates identified as Okike Chinyere emerged as the best graduating MSc degree student in Peace and Conflict Resolution at the National Open University, NOUN.
Aside from Chineyere good result another inmate identified as Alegbe Afolabi also obtained a Master’s degree in the same course.
In a speech delivered by one of the inmates, their gratitude was expressed to Controller General, Haliru Nababa, and the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN for the opportunity given to them to study.
The Controller of Correctional Service, Adewale Francis Adebisi, urged inmates to imbibe the virtues of education and they should not give up on their dreams. He further encouraged them to take up opportunities available to them while in detention so they can become useful to society when they are released.
